Job Title: Clinical Lab Supervisor

Location: Cambridge, MA

Duration: 6-8 Months

JOB DESCRIPTION: 

You'll be the main production floor resource having responsibility for the production and operations of the daily activities of the production team.  Individuals will be managing production and equipment resources, aiming to be meeting production goals such as monitoring throughput for all processes and operations, workflow schedules, and overseeing efficient processing of samples, simultaneously maintaining optimal quality. You'll be responsible for the supervision of direct reports.  The Clinical Lab Supervisor also routinely runs production and coordinates daily operations.   

DUTIES:

  • Having knowledge of product procedures and active coordination of related automating, QC assays and company system procedures.
  • Monitoring daily workflow of all samples. Ensuring volume metrics will be tracked and reported in multiple databases regularly.  Ensuring that appropriate detection capacity needs will be met.
  • Reviewing work metrics. Resolving technical problems and ensuring remedial actions are taken.
  • Escalating personnel or lab issues to the Manager.
  • Monitoring and recording status of workflow queues; ensuring samples are processed in a timely manner and adhering to quality standards.
  • Coordinating team workflow with scheduling projects, ensures that priority projects will be triaged appropriately in conjunction with bulk production work.
  • Gathering and organizing process data including turnaround time, material yields, forecasts, and automation performance. Promptly and regularly reporting corresponding data to management.  
  • Serving as production floor resource at process interfaces- for example with the LIMS and Analytical departments, Supply and Quality Management, and other laboratory departments.
  • Working with Environmental Health and Safety rep, enforcing compliance with biosafety regulations (state and local requirements).
    • Assisting Environmental Health and Safety with implementing and managing laboratory safety programs, and ensuring team and laboratory are in compliance
  • Forecasting materials and supply needs and ensuring QC testing of critical reagents. 
  • Assisting in troubleshooting quality issues alongside DEV team. Organizing meetings and reporting updates to management.
  • Assisting team with the creation and updating A3 Problem Solving and Continuous Improvement projects. 
  • Communicating and following up on repair and maintenance needs for all relevant Production processes and automation, ensuring fixes are verified before production.
  • Assisting in Quarterly Goal targets, complying with Change Management, and procedures regarding Implementation.

Management:

  • Oversees the training of employees regarding standard protocols and procedures. 
    • Ensuring that staff are familiar with specific protocols.
    • Creating and signing off on Personnel Training Plans and Logs
  • Assisting in leading team weekly meetings; reviewing and assisting with closing out deviation tickets.
  • Assisting in reviewing and providing follow up to quality reporting meetings.
  • Working with management, ensuring that all staffing goals are met.
    • Assisting in hiring by interviewing applicants for team positions; gathers team feedback.
  • Coordinating and managing new laboratory employee orientation. 
  • Acting as a role model for other lab personnel to follow.
  • Identifying training and education needs of individuals performing tests.
  • Demonstrating capability of assessing a situation from many perspectives, considering various alternatives and proposing the appropriate action to supervisors.
  • Demonstrating strong leadership; develops standards of performance, follows policies, and areas responsible for accountability.
  • Making effort to expand knowledge of dept. and lab operations (attending continuing management education courses provided by the company)
  • Providing one-on-ones on a weekly basis with direct reports; maintains mentorship of direct reports.
    • Maintains personnel files and records
    • Provides performance evaluations and feedback
  • Performing duties independently without supervision is required.
  • Assuming responsibilities and making decisions as required in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Participating in meetings; facilitating discussion with data and recommending process improvements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, or similar, is mandatory.
  • Three years of experience with lab techniques and supervisory experience required.
  • A background working in a high-throughput laboratory environment with automation is desired.
  • Having a background in scientific development is desired.
  • Required- strong verbal and written communication skills, and able to interact effectively with an cross-functional group of computer scientists and lab biologists.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skill are mandatory.
