Job Description:
The Histotechnologist I will support routine and non-routine histology activities in a high-complexity laboratory environment. This role is responsible for preparing tissue specimens, maintaining quality standards, supporting workflow queues, and collaborating with laboratory and pathology team members to ensure timely, accurate processing of specimens. The position also supports quality management practices, troubleshooting, process improvement efforts, and audit readiness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain stringent quality standards and promptly communicate any issues that may affect test results or employee safety to appropriate management representatives.
- Perform routine and non-routine histology activities, including microtomy, H&E staining, and immunohistochemistry.
- Train on workflow queues and support specimen workflow as needed.
- Prepare reagents, solutions, and controls.
- Perform and document equipment maintenance and calibration.
- Assist with sample returns, as necessary.
- Interact with Pathologists and cross-functional team members to ensure specimens are processed in a timely manner with high quality.
- Process specimens for research and development sponsored studies.
- Assist with technical troubleshooting and identify opportunities for process improvements within Histopathology.
- Assist in identifying issues, performing root cause analysis, and documenting findings.
- Assist with and participate in internal and external audits.
- Assist in the training of new laboratory personnel.
- Prioritize work effectively and drive results with a strong emphasis on quality.
- Work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Maintain open communication with internal employees, managers, and customers as needed.
- Support and comply with company Quality Management System policies and procedures.
- Work a designated schedule and maintain strong computer skills.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of an AA degree or equivalent required.
- Bachelor of Arts or Science in Biomedical Laboratory Science, Clinical Science, or a related field preferred.
- 2-3 years of related experience in a high-complexity laboratory preferred.
- Experience with tissue processing techniques, including microtomy, slide preparation, H&E staining, immunohistochemistry, and macrodissection.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal laboratory regulations preferred.
- Ability to integrate and apply feedback in a professional manner.
- Ability to manage daily test processing needs with a strong emphasis on quality.
- Ability to analyze and solve basic issues that affect test performance.
- Strong teamwork, computer, and automation skills.
- Ability to communicate proactively, consistently, clearly, and honestly.
- Outstanding professionalism, leadership, and communication skills.
- Licensure requirements may vary based on laboratory location. If operating in NYS, active ASCP Board of Certification in HTL and an active license to operate as a Histotechnologist or Clinical Laboratory Technologist in NYS are required.
