About this Job
Location: Portsmouth, NH (Onsite 2 Days/Week)
Length: 6 Month Contract to Hire
Job Description:
Provide enterprise-wide security architecture leadership across technologies, applications, cloud platforms, infrastructure, and development teams. Define and maintain security architecture principles, standards, reference architectures, and reusable design patterns aligned with NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 and applicable government requirements.
Lead architecture reviews and security design activities for new systems, major changes, cloud services, applications, and system interconnections. Guide engineering and development teams in applying secure-by-design principles, secure SDLC practices, DevSecOps, identity and access management, network security, encryption, logging, monitoring, vulnerability management, and resilient system-design practices.
Ensure security controls and technical safeguards are implemented, documented, assessed, and continuously improved. Manage the lifecycle of security technologies and services, evaluate emerging solutions, and advise leadership on security risks, technology decisions, and modernization priorities.
The Platform Operations organization provides leadership and operational excellence across traditional infrastructure and modern cloud environments. The organization supports the reliable, secure, and scalable delivery of core IT services, including data centers, cloud infrastructure, networks, systems engineering, and end-user support. Through integrated operations and governance, the team enables secure and resilient technology services aligned with regulatory requirements, contractual obligations, and industry best practices.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Security Architecture Oversight and Governance — 30%
- Serve as the designated security architect for enterprise applications, infrastructure, cloud, or platform teams.
- Participate in architecture, design, acquisition, and major-change reviews.
- Provide security guidance throughout the system development lifecycle.
- Evaluate architectures for security, privacy, resilience, scalability, maintainability, auditability, and operational effectiveness.
- Guide teams in applying approved security standards, reference architectures, secure design patterns, and NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 requirements.
- Review identity and access management, network segmentation, encryption, data protection, logging, monitoring, vulnerability management, configuration management, and system interconnections.
- Serve as an escalation point for security architecture decisions, unresolved risks, exceptions, and design concerns.
- Partner with system owners, engineering, cybersecurity, compliance, risk management, and leadership to resolve architecture-related risks.
- Provide technical input to security assessments, authorization activities, System Security Plans, control documentation, Plans of Action and Milestones, and audit deliverables.
- Create, maintain, and govern security architecture patterns and secure designs for on-premises infrastructure, cloud platforms, applications, identity, data, networking, and shared services.
- Develop reusable reference architectures and implementations.
- Define secure configuration baselines for cloud accounts and services, operating systems, platforms, applications, network components, and supporting technologies.
- Establish identity and access patterns covering authentication, authorization, federation, privileged access, service accounts, workload identities, and separation of duties.
- Define secure patterns for data classification, encryption, key management, secrets management, backup, recovery, and data transfer.
- Develop secure hybrid architecture patterns for on-premises, cloud, government customer, and third-party environments.
- Incorporate NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5, zero trust principles, secure software development practices, and applicable contractual or regulatory requirements.
- Ensure designs address prevention, detection, response, recovery, and continuous monitoring.
- Review and approve deviations from established patterns, documenting risks, compensating controls, and remediation requirements.
- Maintain architecture documentation, including diagrams, data flows, trust boundaries, control mappings, security requirements, and implementation guidance.
- Provide architectural oversight for security technologies, platforms, services, protocols, and capabilities.
- Define security, integration, supportability, and architectural requirements for technology selection and adoption.
- Partner with technology owners, infrastructure teams, application teams, procurement, and leadership to assess lifecycle risks and dependencies.
- Review vendor support timelines, end-of-life and end-of-support dates, known vulnerabilities, and other factors affecting continued use.
- Identify obsolete, unsupported, redundant, or insecure technologies and recommend upgrade, replacement, consolidation, or retirement strategies.
- Develop transition and modernization recommendations addressing security risk, mission requirements, operational continuity, cost, and applicable controls.
- Maintain approved security technology standards, reference platforms, and technology decision records.
- Evaluate proposed technology changes for architectural fit, interoperability, control effectiveness, maintainability, and impact on authorized systems.
- Ensure lifecycle decisions address logging, monitoring, access control, encryption, vulnerability management, incident response, and auditability.
- Provide guidance regarding approved security components, protocols, and patterns without assuming responsibility for application library or dependency inventories.
- Improve the usability, consistency, and effectiveness of security technologies, processes, standards, and services.
- Maintain documentation, service catalogs, architecture guidance, implementation instructions, and troubleshooting resources.
- Track requests, recurring issues, and feedback from technology stakeholders.
- Identify pain points, process impediments, duplication, and inefficiencies that limit secure technology adoption.
- Recommend improvements that simplify secure implementation and operation without weakening required controls.
- Develop or refine self-service security capabilities, reusable templates, automation, and standardized workflows.
- Measure the effectiveness and adoption of security patterns, tools, and processes.
- Prioritize improvements based on risk reduction, mission impact, customer requirements, and operational value.
- Create and maintain documentation, presentations, guidance, and training materials on security standards and architecture practices.
- Educate engineering, development, infrastructure, and operations teams on cloud security, hybrid architecture, NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 controls, secure SDLC practices, identity, data protection, and threat-informed design.
- Mentor technical teams and leads on security architecture decisions, risk analysis, and control implementation.
- Facilitate architecture workshops, threat-modeling sessions, design reviews, and security communities of practice.
- Share emerging threats, technologies, patterns, lessons learned, and government security expectations.
- Promote shared accountability for security while helping teams implement controls efficiently and consistently.
Qualifications:
- Strong experience in enterprise security architecture across applications, infrastructure, cloud, and hybrid environments.
- Strong knowledge of NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5, zero trust principles, and security controls.
- Experience developing security standards, reference architectures, secure design patterns, and configuration baselines.
- Strong understanding of IAM, network security, encryption, data protection, logging/monitoring, and vulnerability management.
- Experience with secure SDLC, DevSecOps, threat modeling, and secure-by-design practices.
- Experience with security technologies such as Microsoft Entra, Elastic, Varonis, Zscaler, and ForeScout, or comparable platforms and solutions.
- Experience leading security architecture and design reviews and identifying security risks and remediation strategies.
- Familiarity with SSPs, POA&Ms, security assessments, control documentation, and audit requirements.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to partner with engineering, infrastructure, cybersecurity, compliance, and leadership teams.
