Job Description:
Seeking a senior technical leader to drive the development, prototyping, and delivery of complex electronics systems across a diverse portfolio of mission areas.
This role sits at the intersection of hands-on engineering, program execution, and organizational leadership. The successful candidate will lead teams responsible for designing, building, integrating, and delivering custom electronics systems—from early-stage concept development through prototyping, testing, low-rate production, and technology transfer to industry partners.
This is not a purely research-focused role. The ideal candidate brings a balanced background spanning R&D, prototyping, and system realization, with a demonstrated ability to translate concepts into fieldable systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Technical Leadership & Strategy
- Lead the strategy and execution of complex electronics system development across multiple programs and mission areas
- Provide expert guidance on electronics architecture, design, integration, and test
- Actively participate in design reviews, technical trade studies, and system-level decision making
- Drive adoption of best practices across hardware development, prototyping, and system integration
- Help shape future investments in electronics development infrastructure, tools, and laboratory capabilities
- Contribute to the development of new capabilities, including standing up and modernizing laboratory environments
2. Program Leadership & Execution
- Lead and support programs across the full lifecycle: concept development, design, prototyping, integration, test, delivery, operation, and transition
- Operate as a technical lead, deputy program manager, or oversight authority on complex efforts
- Ensure successful execution of programs by guiding technical direction, schedules, budgets, and staffing plans
- Support proposal development, sponsor engagement, and program growth initiatives
- Provide technical and programmatic oversight for high-visibility, mission-critical efforts
3. Team Leadership & Development
- Lead and develop a diverse technical workforce including engineers, researchers, and technical specialists
- Oversee a segment of the organization and contribute to overall group leadership as part of a multi-leader team
- Foster a high-performance culture focused on technical excellence, accountability, and collaboration
- Mentor staff, support career development, and build future technical leaders
- Participate in recruiting, hiring, and organizational planning efforts
4. Prototyping, Production & Operations Integration
- Lead efforts that bridge research, prototyping, and system delivery
- Ensure teams are not only designing systems but also building, testing, and delivering hardware
- Guide the transition of systems from concept to functional prototypes and operational systems
- Maintain engagement with laboratory environments, integration activities, and test efforts
5. Supply Chain & Technical Decision-Making
- Provide guidance on make vs. buy decisions for complex electronics systems
- Advise on and oversee multi-million dollar procurements and vendor engagements
- Leverage knowledge of the electronics supply chain to support efficient and effective prototyping
- Support staff in navigating vendor selection, component sourcing, and external partnerships
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field (advanced degree preferred)
- Significant experience in electronics hardware development, including design, integration, and test of complex systems
- Demonstrated experience delivering systems across the full lifecycle: concept through prototyping and production
- Proven leadership experience managing technical teams, projects, or organizational segments
- Experience working in environments that require high-reliability or mission-critical systems (e.g., aerospace, defense, space)
- Strong ability to lead technical teams while remaining engaged in hands-on engineering activities
- Experience with space-based or flight hardware systems (strongly preferred)
- Background in complex prototyping environments involving custom-built electronics (not solely COTS integration)
- Experience operating as a Chief Engineer, Deputy Program Manager, or equivalent leadership role
- Familiarity with electronics supply chains, vendors, and procurement processes
- Experience supporting or leading laboratory development or infrastructure build-out efforts
- Ability to work across multidisciplinary teams including mechanical, systems, software, and test engineering
